Back to Life, Back to Reality: Decoding Cancer Survivorship
Next dates: October 19th and 22nd, 2018
Have you finished active treatment for cancer or are you on the verge of completion?
It is a twisted irony that somehow life post-treatment feels harder rather than what everyone else expects it to be- a celebration that you are done. Unlike finishing a course of antibiotics and feeling better, when active treatment ends for cancer, you are only then confronted by the tremendous toll it took on your body, mind, spirit, and self.
You are grateful to be alive AND you are completely shell shocked by what has happened.
The treatment plan for kicking the crap out of cancer was pretty clear, yet post-treatment plans are generally vague- spouting off all of that good advice you have heard all of our your life. In fact, there is a good chance that you followed that good advice prior to diagnosis, and still ended up with cancer anyways. It feels unjust AND it is another reminder of how little control you have in life. Your best efforts cannot guarantee your health.
Yet, you must find ways to build up your reserves and heal, because you also feel incredible pressure to make the best of the time that you have on this earth. Cancer made it quite clear that the veil between life and death is thin.
I don’t know about you, but when I couple a desire to feel better with the pressure to make the best of things, it is a recipe for disaster.
I was so excited for my survivorship meeting post treatment, feeling like it would really help map out what I needed to do next. I had seen the emotional toll on my mom between her first cancer diagnosis and the second one, so I had some advance warning of how complex it is.
Sadly, beyond giving it a title and a list of general wellness tips, it was clear that my NP did not feel inspired by the format, and neither was I.
This is not ok.
This beast, cancer survivorship, is a nut you can crack, especially if you have guidance of someone who has not only gone through it, but someone who also has the psychological expertise to get you there.
Because cancer is not simply a medical problem.
After all, when you about it, the cost of not finding a way through survivorship… the cost of feeling lost without tangible goals… the cost of not finding ways to cope with the lack of control and deep uncertainty we all face in this life…
The cost is just too damn high.
Here is what we’ll cover in this 2 hour, highly interactive and engaging workshop:
- Talk openly about the reality of how cancer impacts the body, mind, spirit, and self in overt & covert ways- decreasing the confusion, validating what you are going thru- rather than feeling like you are losing your mind
- Id your own unique needs for healing so that you can feel CLEAR about your own map for healing- breaking it down into manageable steps
- Break through the BS that keeps you stuck- like feeling pressured to be positive and grateful at the expense of being real about the massive range of emotions that cancer naturally brings up
- Connecting with other cancer survivors in a small group format to foster safety, while being guided by Stephanie, who not only has expertise as a therapist but also is an insider since she has been both a cancer patient and caregiver.
